VIETNAM
“Anger can teach us forgiveness, hate can teach us love, and war can teach us peace.”
— Le Ly Hayslip
26,400 Vietnamese Americans resided in New Jersey by 2017. Early immigrants risked their lives to flee political persecution, rampant poverty, and strict governmental control that descended upon the country following the Vietnam War. From 1975 to 1992, the United States experienced the largest influx of Vietnamese immigrants in its history, many of whom came with limited English proficiency and low levels of education. Now, over forty years after the fall of the Saigon government, Vietnamese Americans have become successful political and economic players in U.S. society.
